CHAPTER 20

Rave

The narrow back alley was as unassuming as they came. This section of town was not nearly as posh as the distant tall towers, several crowded clusters of buildings all combining into a mosh pit of confusion.

Dull yellow and blueish light filled the underground basement apartment. The primarily open space contained everything needed for a good secret hideout. A small stove and refrigerator sat dormant in the kitchen area, which flowed into the living room with an offset round table where more planning than eating likely occurred.

The antique furniture, while old and well-used from hours of waiting, still looked welcoming. The room’s centerpiece was a TV playing news from one of those twenty-four-hour cable channels. The overbearing weight of political commentary had been replaced by curious stories about the magical community and how it affected the current state of affairs around the globe.

Damp air and the unidentifiable scents expected in a cramped urban setting topped off the safe house’s overall feel.

“Is that him?” I asked when Petro darted to the door.

“Yup,” he replied, referring to Oscar. “He’s not alone either, boss. I think you are in for a surprise.”

Jim Smith, the Vampire drummer of Planes Drifter, walked in beside Oscar as they shook off what appeared to be rain.

“Holy shit,” I perked up. “Jim, what’s going on? Is the rest of the crew here?”

“Hey, Max, been a while. No, the other fellas don’t like coming down here. I just happened to be visiting my cousin,” the cool, calm, and collected Vampire replied, smiling genuinely.

Oscar, being who he was, continued to shake off the water.

“How does it rain in a cave?” Petro asked. Phil and I paused, having the same question.

“I’m pretty sure you saw the clouds overhead. The place is so big it does this about twice a week. Due to all the salt, the moisture pushes up. After a few days, it forms rain, and the cycle continues. It keeps the place from getting too dry, but the salty rain messes with my fur,” he grumped, having let the light coat of tabby hair that I was accustomed to out.

“I’m sure you’re not here to study the weather underground,” Jim interrupted, setting a bag of food and drinks on the table. “Here are some things to keep you guys fed for a few days. I don’t recommend wandering too far off the beaten path.”

Phil was already shuffling through the food, finding that Jim had also brought a six-pack of Vamp Amber.

“Yes, bruther. I needed one of these,” Phil thanked as he popped open one of the room-temperature beers.

Jim just grunted while everyone converged on the small kitchen island.

“So, what’s the deal?” I asked, getting to the point.

“You’re going to meet with Gabriella. Her friends call her Gabby. There’s a club further into the city. Here,” Jim relayed, seeing our map laid out flat and pointing to a place that looked several miles away.

“How are we going to get there?” I asked. He nodded at Oscar.

“Just you, I’m afraid,” Oscar purred as Petro and Phil screwed their faces up.
